'ONE WORLD' BY AUSTRALIA'S MARK TEMPANY SHOULD BE THE IMAX CINEMA THEME SONG
I have mixed feelings about writing this one, because the manner in which australian country musician MARK TEMPANY ended his association with my family was to say the least lacking the personal touch and unbiasedly i would go as far to say quite heartless. Mark may well have had his reasons for disowning my mother after years of loyal support when few others gave him the time of day, but he certainly has not told me or my mother why. Some years ago Mark relocated from Brisbane to the seaside town of Whyalla in South Australia, which i assume was neccesary so he could be with his partner Alison Hams, who is actually a very underated singer/guitarist. Mark hasn't released a new album of material since THE LONG HIGHWAY in 2004, which included a few great tracks, such as WRONG PLACE WRONG TIME, a tale of harsh Aboriginal life in suburban Sydney, MY FRIEND - a tribute song to well known australian bush poet BOBBY MILLER and a rousing duet with bush poet and part time singer PAT DRUMMOND called THE DARLING DOWNS. I dont like Pat Drummond singing on his own whatsoever but i actually like him singing on this duet. The album previous to THE LONG HIGHWAY was FAR AWAY (2000), which was a much more lush sounding affair, with more layered production and more lyrical intensity. The title track almost passes as a rock song, with the help of primitive but immaculate production from DASH MCIVOR, who also helped out with playing instruments on the album, half the FAR AWAY album would have to go down as some of the best contemporary australian music since John Farnham and WHISPERING JACK in the 1980's. The other half objectively i would have to say is a little on the forced side, even if every attempt was made to dress them up with excellent production. Besides the winsome MOUNTAIN MELODY and the tribute to JOHN DENVER titled THE FINAL GOODBYE, Mark Tempany's greatest song of all time remains ONE WORLD, an absolutely awe-inspiring song which Mark wrote after watching NASA footage on the TV of the earth as the space shuttle saw it, a view of the world without any geographical or racial borders. If IMAX cinemas right around the world aren't using ONE WORLD for their soundtrack then they should be. Mark Tempany deserves that much for this beauty.
