THE SKYHOOKS FOUND A JUKEBOX IN SIBERIA

THE SKYHOOKS are regarded by many to be the quinessential australian glam band, in the same category as other glam acts of the 70`s including SHERBET and the very little talked about Sydney outfit HUSH, whose only hit was a cover of BONY MORONIE in 1975. Although glam isn't my favourite genre by an stretch of the imagination HUSH weren't totally crap, just almost (laugh). SHERBET, which was fronted by singer DARYL BRAITHWAITE, who re-invented himself starting in the late 80`s with the albums EDGE and RISE, was more in the glam pop category and not glam rock, although innovative the band's sound already sounded dated by 1980. THE SKYHOOKS nowadays sound dated as well, but there's no questioning the band's place in the unofficial australian rock hall of fame. I never liked singer SHIRLEY STRACHAN's high pitched shrill voice, enough to make you grab for the aspirin, but dynamically i cant deny i like some SHYHOOKS tunes from their 70`s heyday. Long after their disbandment, THE SKYHOOKS recorded a one-off new track JUKEBOX IN SIBERIA, to tie in with the release of a greatest hits collection in 1990. Most fans would say LIVING IN THE 70's is the one, but to me this 1990 tack on beats anything THE SKYHOOKS recorded in their heyday. The cynical and grouchy RED SYMONS off HEY HEY IT'S SATURDAY was of course the bass guitarist in THE SKYHOOKS.
