EDDIE COCHRAN - MILK COW BLUES (STUDIO VERSION)
Heard a couple of live versions of this song, the first time being when i bought a RHINO RECORDS best of compilation of EDDIE COCHRAN, but until a couple of days ago I had never his studio version of the blues standard MILK COW BLUES, which has been covered by a wide array of other acts including AEROSMITH and WILLIE NELSON.
Hailing originally from Minnesota, Cochrane on occasions was quite capable of cranking out some riveting and state of the art rockabilly, when he was on fire he was in the same league as ELVIS PRESLEY and BUDDY HOLLY, and probaly heavier.
But just when rock'n'roll superstardom beckoned, he seemed to voluntarily step back into the safe territory of cow poke rockabilly, a bit like WAYLON JENNINGS going to Nashville with a steel guitar instead of Memphis with a Telecaster.
My point - Cochrane got cold feet with rock'n'roll and went too soft. Holly's tragic death in early 1959 rattled Cochrane bigtime, he never got over it, just like Waylon Jennings never did and the last year of his life until his car accident related death in England on April 16th, 1960 was a drugged out and alchoholic blur. Such a sad demise.
