ROSS WILSON AND THE URBAN LEGENDS GIVE MOOD SWING A VOCAL JAZZ FACELIFT

The original version of MOOD SWING off the 1989 album DARK SIDE OF THE MAN has very diffrent dynamics to the one featured here, a live performance during the 90`s which appears to have been recorded for ABC TV. ROSS WILSON was always renowned for his very diverse influences, including blues, jazz and doowop, but it wasn't until he formed his moonlighting band THE URBAN LEGENDS during the early 90`s following DARK SIDE OF THE MAN and the splintering of his 80`s outfit MONDO ROCK that he ventured far outside the rock genre. From what i can recall, ROSS WILSON AND THE URBAN LEGENDS have never recorded an album, for all intensive purposes i believe the band was a bit of fun for Wilson which gave him the oppurtunity to perform on stage here and there with his old MONDO ROCK bandmate, guitarist ERIC MCCUSKER. THE URBAN LEGENDS provided the oppurtunity for Wilson and band to perform jazzed up and bluesey versions of old MONDO ROCK, DADDY COOL and some of Wilson's solo songs, as well as doing the same to some well known covers. MOOD SWING in its original form is a melodramatic spacey progressive sounding ballad, with the assistance of THE URBAN LEGENDS Wilson re-invented the song and turned into one of the best pieces of australian vocal jazz there ever was. It's sacrilege that these guys have never recorded an album together. In place of that, i would highly recommend you get your hands on the ROSS WILSON bootleg recording album GO BONGO GO WILD, which is a compilation of his one off recordings during the entire 1990's. It was released around 2001, but it may be very difficult to locate nowadays. Anyway in the meantime, have a listen to MOOD SWING by ROSS WILSON AND THE URBAN LEGENDS.
