BUDDY HOLLY DIDN'T WANT THE MAILMAN TO BRING HIM ANY MORE BLUES
Here's something a lot more old fashioned and traditional than what's featured on the previous post, a long lost overlooked classic B-side by the rocker who i personally rate as the king of rock'n'roll and rockabilly, the late and forever great BUDDY HOLLY. The A-side which the song MAILMAN BRING ME NO MORE BLUES played second fiddle to, WORDS OF LOVE, is one of Holly's most famous commercial flops, in exactly the same category as IT'S SO EASY, another flop which i regard as one of the greatest pieces of true rockabilly ever recorded. WORDS OF LOVE is not my favourite Holly tune by a long shot, up against some of his other romantic crooners like the orchestral backed TRUE LOVE WAYS, which was recorded only a few months before his tragic death in February, 1959, is perhaps is a little too simple by Holly's normally groundbreaking and genre shattering standards, even though the song is heartwarming and dare i say immaculately produced by Norman Petty. MAILMAN BRING ME NO MORE BLUES outshines WORDS OF LOVE, it makes the top 3 of Holly B-sides alongside the much covered NOT FADE AWAY and the ripsnorting rhythm and blues barber quartet masterpiece LONESOME TEARS, the latter being the B-side to IT'S SO EASY. It comes off the second full length Holly album released in early 1958 on the Brunswick label, with his band THE CRICKETS backing him, JOE. B MAULDIN on bass and JERRY ALLISON on drums, but minus NIKI SULLIVAN who by then had quit the band. However, Sullivan's swashbuckling rhythm guitar track was retained for one song on the album - a blistering cover of READY TEDDY that doesn't even last two minutes. Like a number of tracks on BUDDY HOLLY, Norman Petty's wife Vi played the piano on MAILMAN BRING ME NO MORE BLUES, which along with Holly's typically rich and textured downward strumming and the advantage afforded by the perfect acoustics of Petty's CLOVIS recording studio ensured the song was destined to become one of many timeless classics by the bespectacled boy from Lubbock, Texas.
