'DONT NEED MERCY' CLASSIC NO-NONSENSE PUB ROCK BY THE ANGELS
Here's one straight from the vault of classic no-nonsense, unpretentious australian pub rock. THE ANGELS have always been maligned as being the ugly cousins of AC/DC, a great pub rock band that never quite matched the intensity and deafening riffs of Malcolm and Angus Young.
Although THE ANGELS lacked the heavy metal power of AC/DC, the band was a lot more streetwise than the stadium filling Acca Dacca, with lyrics to match the occasion. Nothing was ever off-limits, sacred or taboo with what DOC NEESON sung about, dalliances with drugs, seedy one-night stands with prostitutes and violent retribution were all regular themes on any ANGELS album.
THE ANGELS were the quinessential australian pub rock from the moment the Young brothers packed up and took AC/DC to america, although wracked by many line-up changes with drummers, brothers John and Rick Brewster, rhythm and lead guitarist in that order, continue to be in the band to this day.
The biggest shock of all come last year when the Brewster brothers announced they were recruiting former SCREAMING JETS frontman DAVE GLEESON to record new material with. Apparently THE ANGELS released a live album of a performance at QPAC theatre in Brisbane early this year, the big SCOOP is that the band is just about to release a new studio album with Dave Gleeson, the first one for The Angels since the 90`s, on the 31st August, 2012.
It will be titled TAKE IT TO THE STREETS. Until then, here is an absolute pub rock boogie classic DONT NEED MERCY, my favourite ANGELS tune of them all, the lead off track on the 1994 compilation album EVIDENCE.
