GURRUMUL 'BLIND' ON STAGE PERFORMING 'DJARMIRRI'
GEOFFREY GURRUMUL YUNUPINGU, has become one of Australia's most popular musical export since leaving his former band SALTWATER and embarking on a whirlwind and critically acclaimed solo career. The Aboriginal artist of Arnhem Land descent, who was born blind, has developed a rich and textured style that evokes black american soul and vocal groups like LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO just as much as it does traditional forms of folk. His two solo albums to date, GURRUMUL (2008) and RRAKALA (2011) are both sung almost entirely to my knowledge in traditional Aboriginal language, hard to believe a blind man strumming away with two chords with only a double bass accompanyment could do what Gurrumul can. This live performance features my favourite song off his first album - DJARIMIRRI. The fact i cant understand a word this guy is singing about doesn't make a scrap of diffrence, because it really is beautiful music that will never sound dated.
