HOCUS POCUS BY FOCUS (1971)
By request, here is a 70`s instrumental progressive rock classic from Dutch band FOCUS, off their second album MOVING WAVES from 1971. Characterised by the same rhythm versus keyboard dynamics made popular at the time by other bands such as Electric Light Orchestra and Deep Purple, and backed up by the rollicking guitar work of JAN AKKERMAN, whose unique style on the song HOCUS POCUS sounds something like a mixture of Robert Fripp from King Crimson and the heavy rock guitar of Michael Schenker, FOCUS is one band which has honestly escaped my radar up until now, which is surprising i guess given that i am a big fan of ELO and all that proto-type heavy rock guitar like Montrose and UFO, the latter being the band which Michael Schenker started out with. HOCUS POCUS straddles the genre divide between prog and heavy rock guitar better than just about any other song i have ever heard.
