'MY BROTHER JAKE' ONE SONG I WISH I COULD PLAY ON MY OWN PIANO
Free were really the perfect blend of blues, rock and soul. Had Led Zeppelin never come to being chances are this seminal band of late 60`s bluesers who were instrumental in the creation of hard rock would have been a lot more appreciated and accepted in the stadium rock era of the early 70`s. Up against Zeppelin's first two groundbreaking albums in the late 60`s, Free's extremely patchy debut TONS OF SOBS doesn't come close. Suffering badly in the production department, the album only yielded two songs which were comparable to Zeppelin's stadium sized blues - namely SWEET TOOTH and the funk rock of I'M A MOVER. With TONS OF SOBS, Free was still finding its feet, but all that changed with the legendary FIRE AND WATER set, the hugely popular single ALL RIGHT NOW and the magnificent title track, which i rate as the best FREE song of them all, make up for a few mediocre fillers. The two songs are worth more than most 10 song albums which were released in the early 70`s. Besides FIRE AND WATER the song, my next favourite FREE tune is MY BROTHER JAKE, which was released as a stand alone single and not off an album. It was released in 1970, the same year as the FIRE AND WATER album. There's no song quite like it - innovative, vibrant, joyful, inspiring and unique. Magical mixture of piano blues, funk and soul. If there was one song i'd love to learn to play the piano for it's MY BROTHER JAKE.
