GENESIS SOLDIERED ON WITHOUT PETER GABRIEL AND RECORDED AN ALL TIME ENGLISH PROG ROCK CLASSIC

Apologies for the lack of a video clip to go with this article, to put it bluntly the Blogger program for composing blogs sucks big time because some goon or goons working for Google in the US decided to supposedly revamp Blogger, but seriously they have totally screwed the blogging concept with the new Blogger. As soon as possible i'll be going to Wordpress. Wordpress should have been the last word of the first paragraph but i cant paragraph anything on this hocus pocus program now, it's just completely shit. Anyhow, forget all about the technical side of my blog, thought it was time to take a trip back to the deep heart of the 1970`s, when hardcore UK progressive rock was in full swing at the apex of its innovation. The two bands which led the pack was Pink Floyd and Genesis, for the most part Floyd won more hearts in the mainstream in the 70`s thanks to three of the most definitive prog rock albums of all time, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, WISH YOU WERE HERE and of course the Roger Waters dominated THE WALL, but the one Genesis album which to me beats them all and is one of the great progressive rock albums of all time is TRICK OF THE TAIL from 1976. Being the first Genesis album after the departure of the operatic and theatrical Peter Gabriel, it was up in the air how the band would fare after losing such a vital part of their artistic DNA. Drummer Phil Collins reluctantly stepped up and took on the role of the new lead vocalist, the resultant album still displays the same improvisation and experimentation made famous by Peter Gabriel, but in a much more assessible & melodic structure. At this stage in the band's history, it was a short lived 4-piece, later retracting to a 3-piece following the departure of Steve Hackett. TRICK OF THE TAILS'S best moments are the opening track DANCE ON A VOLCANO, the 8 minute Tony Banks/Mike Rutherford penned RIPPLES, the title track and the tongue in cheek parody of petty criminality ROBBERY, ASSAULT AND BATTERY. Unmissable prog rock.
