DONT GET EATEN BY THE DIRTY OLD EGG SUCKIN' DOG IF YOU ARE EVER FLUSHED FROM THE BATHROOM OF YOUR HEART
These two 'love' songs off the epic and groundbreaking live AT FOLSOM PRISON by who else but the late JOHNNY CASH, the man who were black and liked to get up close and personal with jailbirds and push the limits like no country artist before and after him ever did, was a short fire reprieve from all the sorrowful tunes of lamenting regret which got the lions share of the famous performance inside the notorious maximum security prison in 1968.
Not that i am knocking the raw intensity and emotiveness of songs like the opening FOLSON PRISON BLUES, a rollicking, uplifting and playful exhibition of some no-nonsense rockabilly, the brooding DOWN IN THE DUNGEON, a song perfectly pitched to represent the despair of the prisoners he was performing in front of, or GREYSTONE CHAPEL, a song built around the words given to Cash on a piece of paper just prior to the performance from convicted murderer GLEN SHERLEY, but when i need a laugh, and these days that is quite often, i'll often play AT FOLSON PRISON just to hear these two hilarious little tunes which is the ultimate example of Johnny Cash self depreciation.
AT FOLSON PRISON is not a country album or a country rock album, it's what i call an experience. A bit like watching SCHINDLERS LIST, a bit gut churning, a little unsettling but it still leaves you with a warm feeling and not a cold one. DIRTY OLD EGG SUCKING DOG and FLUSHED FROM THE BATHROOM OF YOUR HEART is unashamedly Tim Badrick's sort of humour.
