SILENCE ON THE STREETS OF ADELAIDE AFTER THE CURTAIN FELL ON FORMULA ONE'S ULTIMATE STREET RACE
Motor racing is not my forte, but i am attuned enough to the sport to know that the city of Adelaide was unfairly robbed of staging the Australian Formula One Grand Prix beginning in 1996. Adelaide had staged the event from 1985. Like so many things in motor racing, politics more than anything else was behind the agenda to move the race to Melbourne's Albert Park circuit from the streets of Adelaide, ask most F1 fans in Australia and i know that to this day they'll tell you Adelaide was far and away the better of the two circuits. In fact, many hardcore F1 fans from all corners of the globe have always classed Adelaide as being the best street circuit of all time. The greatest beauty of Adelaide's streets is that they are so much wider than in any other city in Australia and i would imagine most other bigger cities around the world. Take Monaco as an example, it's famous for staging what's considered to be the other great F1 street circuit race every year, despite it being as tight as a sardine can and making passing the opposition a perilous activity, even for the most experienced drivers. The street circuit of Adelaide still hosts the annual touring car race each year, which is great news for australians who like Holden versus Ford battles on the racetrack, but this is still of little consolation to F1 fans who still feel there is a void left because of the F1's absense in Adelaide 15 years on from when F1 was last seen there.
