MILES LOGAN THE LA JEWEL THIEF BECOMES DETECTIVE MALONE
MARTIN LAWRENCE style humour always seemed more suitable for stand-up than on the big screen, simply because his body language is usually more funny than his one line smart arse humour. The 48 year old Frankfurt born comedian, who has been a bit quiet in Hollywood for a few years now but who achieved his biggest career break courtesy of his roles in BAD BOYS (1995) and BAD BOYS 2 (2003) as well as the two BIG MOMMA'S movies, after a solid but unspectacular five year stint in his namesake sitcom MARTIN in the mid 90`s, was arguably at his funniest best on the big screen for the parody laden cop film BLUE STREAK in 1999.
Unlike most action cop movies from the 80's, the music soundtrack accompanying the film wasn't better than the movie (laugh), but I hate hip hop and LA gangster music which probaly explains why i never liked the soundtrack to BLUE STREAK. JAY-Z had a massively popular single off the soundtrack with the song GIRL'S BEST FRIEND.
The movie itself as I was getting to is one of Lawrence's best efforts as far as convincing and genuinely effortless one line humour goes, for someone who was always come across as a second generation EDDIE MURPHY wannabe in Hollywood MARTIN LAWRENCE put on a screamer of a performance as jewel thief turned bogus cop MILES LOGAN, a feat he pulls off after sneaking his way into police headquarters posing as a very fugly and bucked toothed pizza delivery man and stealing the ID card of a rookie detective, which his uncle Lou uses to create a counterfeit police ID card for his crazy son of a bitch nephew.
The movie begins with the jewel heist which goes horribly wrong, after his partner in crime Deacon, played by PETER GREENE, turns evil and kills another member of the heist squad after deciding he wanted the diamond all for himself, Miles Logan eludes him long enough to make it to a construction site in LA where he hides the $17 million diamond in a vent, only then to get arrested by 'real' police and thrown in the slammer for 2 years.
After getting out of jail, he heads back to where he hid the diamond two years before, only to find a new police headquarters now covers the construction site. From there, the movie plays out on the extreme measures which Miles Logan applies while posing as upstanding LA police officer Detective Malone to miraculously find the misplaced treasure. Some very funny moments in BLUE STREAK, I have included a You Tube clip with this post, a total crack up.
