LUCY'S DAUGHTER A TOP NOTCH AUSTRALIAN COUNTRY ALBUM BY NICKI GILLIS
I can't say I follow Nikki as a loyal devoted fan, it was mere good timing and coincidence more than anything that I got to see her play a very poorly patronised gig which she performed at the Tamworth Town Hall in January 2010 sometime during the annual Tamworth Country Music Festival.
The opening track REMEMBER ME and her brilliant and very un-copycat cover of Cold Chisel's FLAME TREES should have topped any country music chart the world over, the Lucinda Williams sounding BALLAD OF LUCY JORDAN, with it's very grainy country fusion underbelly, and the song she co-wrote with Australian country fusion legend Kevin Bennett, from The Flood, called LEAVIN' YOU FOR MYSELF, a playful boogie woogie flavoured romp, are really top notch and progressive thinking country music tunes.
Nikki threw in a very satisfactory cover of The Eurythmics' THORN IN MY SIDE, while all the bluegrass fans out there should really dig track number 11 WATCH THE WILDFLOWERS GROW.
For all I know, more than two of the songs might be covers, but really it doesn't matter anyway if there are. Nikki recorded a great country album which stuck mostly to the traditional formulas but with a modern free thinking and free spirited edge.
