A WHITE SPORTS COAT AND A PINK CARNATION WAS A REAL 50'S CHICK PULLER
It's getting late here so i dont want to waffle on too much, a warm bed beckons in the very cool town of Toogoolawah only 8 metres to the left of my lounge suite, but i am still awake enough to put in a plug for a classic old country rockabilly tinged song from the late 50`s that my mum absolutely adored - A WHITE SPORT COAT AND A PINK CARNATION by country crooner Marty Robbins. Apart from the classic genre exploding output by Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley, not much 50`s music takes my fancy but i have always had a soft spot for this one hit wonder. Robbins stuck to the same safe country territory of The Everly Brothers and Johnny Cash for good reason, because like them he just wasn't born to be a revolutionary like Holly or Elvis, with this song Robbins scored by far his biggest and most recognisable hit, WHITE SPORT COAT was one of the biggest hits on the rock'n'roll chart ever by a recognised country musician. The bom bom bom barber quarter backing vocals is a reminder of how innocent rock'n'roll was before the Beatles and Stones come along with norwegian wood and sympathy for the Devil.
