BUDDY HOLLY HAD MOONDREAMS WITH THE DICK JACOB ORCHESTRA

MOONDREAMS is not my favourite BUDDY HOLLY song, it was a valiant attempt by the rock'n'roll revolutionary to strike out in a new direction following his exit from THE CRICKETS, at a time when Elvis was already starting to sing ballads instead of rock'n'roll and when Holly himself was starting to score more lemons than hits on the rock'n'roll charts. MOONDREAMS was one of four songs Holly recorded in late 1958 backed by the DICK JACOBS ORCHESTRA, along with TRUE LOVE WAYS, RAINING IN MY HEART and IT DOESN'T MATTER ANYMORE. According to Google, the song started life as a more typical rockabilly song and written by NORMAN PETTY, Holly's producer, under the branding of the NORMAN PETTY TRIO. Never researched the latter, but a quick Wikipedia search indicates that Holly was credited with playing the guitar for that band and Petty's wife Vi played the piano in the group. Interesting, i am thinking the NORMAN PETTY TRIO might have been just a legal invention for Petty to suck more royalties from Holly. I am only speculating, both men are long dead, all i know is that MOONDREAMS metamorphosed into a very worthy experiment for Holly, not his most convincing effort, but it has the perfect musical 40's noir feel about it nonetheless.
