A COUPLE OF PROG ALBUMS FOR ALL THE 70`S HEADBANGERS OUT THERE (IF THEY`RE STILL ALIVE)
First cab off the rank is the British one, from a rather obscure outfit known as ATOMIC ROOSTER. I haven`t had a chance to listen to most of the music which the band recorded, but I do have one of their recordings in my collection, called IN HEARING OF.
I have browsed the history of the band on
the internet enough to know that the line-up of ATOMIC ROOSTER was volatile for the duration, this particular album features Peter French on vocals, he is actually the second singer for the band, and if music critics are any reliable guide here, IN HEARING OF is maybe the most balanced album the band ever recorded, hardcore prog with some commercial compromises.

The band would go on to have a third lead
singer and take the slightly bizarre direction towards soul inspired prog, quite a radical step, when I get the chance I am going to look into buying a few more CD`s of ATOMIC ROOSTER, maybe one from the original band and another from the latter era featuring the third and final incarnation of the band.
I could have gone into it more and slagged more information to write a more thorough overview of the band.
But before I do that, I would recommend you get your fingers on IN HEARING OF, classic Genesis influenced British progressive rock of the 70`s.
If you want to have more of a headbangers
experience, you might want to have a listen to CARESS OF STEEL, by canuck prog band RUSH.

Quite unlike the British style of prog, RUSH mixed hard rock with an obvious Led Zeppelin influence with the experimentation of Pink Floyd and their equivalents of the day.
Their debut self titled album was more of a straightforward hard rock album, Led Zeppelin-ish to say the least, but their second album, featuring the new drummer and lyricist Neil Peart, saw the band take the headbangers theme to even bigger heights.
It lacked the originality of the debut and the polish of later releases such as 2112 and
HEMISPHERES, but it still rates as one of the best headbanger album in the history of prog.

RUSH in the 80`s over-produced their music far too much, CARESS OF STEEL, despite being completely rough as guts, is the antithesis of their more keyboard inspired 80`s output and it still rocks hard today.
If you can put up with lead singer Geddy Lee`s irritating vocals you may be able to dig the guitar mastery of Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart`s innovative drumming.
