TIM'S TOP 20 PARTY ROCK SONGS : TRACK 6 - I CANT DRIVE 55 by SAMMY HAGAR
SAMMY HAGAR was always the only rocker who could even partly fill the shoes of DAVID LEE ROTH in VAN HALEN, although VH albums featuring Hagar had their moments most of the time the Van Halen brothers opted for a more song based workmanlike formula after the ex-MONTROSE vocalist joined the band in 1985. One listen to Hagar's last solo album before joining Van Halen, VOA (1984), is one of the best substitutes for Lee Roth era Van Halen heavy rock guitar, and the hit single off the album I CANT DRIVE 55, which was by far his biggest selling solo single of all time, is one of my favourite party rock songs around. The title track is a semi-serious stab taking on the acronym for VOICE OF AMERICA network, a bit of pisstakery at the expense of Cold War politics in the White House during the mid 80`s when Ronald Reagon was the Commander-in-Chief.
