Not Patsy Cline, she was more pop than jazz anyway, but I love some of her music.
Probably the best connection between soul music and pop way back in the 60`s was Patsy.
And no, it isn't Billie Holliday either, although I admire her too, just not as much as my favourite female crooner of them all, Washington D.C's Eva Cassidy, who died a premature death at age of 33 in 1996, and never had a proper record deal in her lifetime.
Luckily for all of us Eva recorded enough demos in her brief lifetime to fill six records with the aid of session players.
But it's not Eva either this time round, it's ELLA FITZGERALD. I honestly don't have a clue about this ladies music, she's renowned as being one of the finest jazz vocalists in history, alongside Holliday.
What I do know is that I got this album of her's called 30 BY ELLA, which is an all medley album of her best recordings in collaboration with Benny Carter and his own Magnificent Seven band.
Ella provides the sweet silky smooth vocals, while an euphoric mixture of trumpet, alto and tenor sax, piano, and a grainy rhythm section power the whole ensemble along effortlessly. A great introduction to Ella Fitzgerald that's forsure.
