PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED - THE CRICKETS (FEATURING DAVID BOX ON VOCALS) - 1960
Just a quick one, yonks ago i wrote an article about David Box, a little known and obscure rockabilly guitarist who briefly filled the unfillable shoes of Buddy Holly as lead singer of the Crickets in 1960, following the tragic death of Holly on the 3rd February, 1959. It has to be said that Box was an incredibly good singer, although not as versatile he had a better range than Holly and had he not died himself in a tragic light air crash on the 23rd October, 1964 in Texas he would have gone on i am sure to become one of the great rock'n'roll crooners alongside the likes of Roy Orbison. If you want to read what i previously wrote about David Box, which was actually quite substantial, then i'll leave it up to you to troll through my blog to find the old article on him, the main reason i thought to Take 2 and write this one was to feature the You Tube video of Box singing Holly's very own PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED, not to mention the video features a good photo of Box as he is seen on the front cover of the priceless rockabilly collection THE DAVID BOX STORY. Just remember, Box died at the age of 21 in exactly the same circumstances as Holly did, only diffrence being that Box never had the oppurtunity to gain superstardom and he was barely known outside of Texas. Following his brief tenure in the Crickets in 1960 at the tender age of 16, he put any ambitions for a professional music career on hold until after he had finished schooling. By the time he had done that, Sonny Curtis was already well established as the new Crickets singer and he formed his own band THE RAVENS, not to be confused with the black soul/pop group from that era with the same name. It's a little ambiguous trying to work out exactly what songs Box recorded with The Ravens and what songs he recorded with other bootleg artists but the one quite successful rockabilly single he did score was the fantastic Holly-ish LITTLE LONELY SUMMER GIRL. Box's 1960 re-invention of PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED with The Crickets has turned up on quite a few Buddy Holly and The Cricket's best of's as though Holly was the one to sing it, with no reference to David Box whatsoever. I guess Holly wrote it but Box sung it better. Like most rock'n'roll songs of that era, there was no mucking around, the song only goes 1 minute 43 seconds. Enough time to realise that David Box was one of the greatest rock singers of all time. Sadly tragedy would stand in his way.
