POORLY PLANNED BRISBANE IN DESPERATE NEED OF BETTER PLANNING AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Right from the beginning, going back to colonial times, Brisbane has not been a well planned city by a long shot.
Let's be honest, compared to other capital cities in Australia, especially Adelaide and Perth, Brisbane is at the very bottom of the list when it comes to its overall planning and layout.
It's often joked about that Brisbane's inner city and inner suburb streets are 19th century goat track relics, just with a coat of bitumen. In many instances the joke is actually quite believable.
Adding to Brisbane's planning conundrum is two things - (1) outer metro urbanization, which is creating traffic congestion and bottlenecks on streets and arterials which were never designed to carry the traffic they are, because people continue, once again as a result of "poor planning", to drive into inner Brisbane to work.
And (2), a lacklustre and off times inadequate public transport system. Brisbane doesn't have well integrated public transport, that combines bus and rail services together without having teething problems which so much of the time cause delays and disruption. Just the sort of things that will put people off using public transport.
It's those issues, as well as planning issues in general, that need to be ironed out and remedied in the short term, if Brisbane is to be spared from an even greater traffic congestion calamity than the one the city is already burdened with.
From now on the Brisbane City Council must be in complete unison with the State Government, minus any politics and no matter who's premier and who's Lord Mayor, to develop a much better planning vision for the city. The current one is a bit blurry.
