WHISKEY IN THE JAR MAKES METALLICA AND WOMEN WITH LESBIAN DESIRES GO BALLISTIC
METALLICA made a good habit of copying the musical and fashion trends set by the alternative rock revolution of the early 1990's, after recording some of the most definitive and innovative thrash metal during the 80's and briefly into the 90's with the band's defining recording - the self titled "black album" in 1991.
Many of the band's hardcore fans would have always said way too much, to the point of being just another loud and rowdy alternative rock band, minus all the punk and hardcore influences which propelled albums such as RIDE THE LIGHTNING and MASTER OF PUPPETS.
But amongst all of METALLICA's "sell out" recordings of the 90's, which arguably includes all of the album LOAD and the follow-up RELOAD, which only very marginally saw the band return to more of a "metal sound" - they did record a song off the distinctively punk rock flavoured covers album GARAGE INC. which is quite simply one of the best slabs of ballsy rock' n' roll recorded by any band during the entire 90's.
That song being a cover of THIN LIZZY's mid 70's rocker WHISKEY IN THE JAR - which for THIN LIZZY back in the day was the band's first ever minor hit on the UK charts. Of course METALLICA were always going to try and beef it right up to really make it pack a wallop, and they succeeded.
Interesting video clip to go with the song, besides a classic hard rock recording you get to see some very drunk and disorderly women acting out some lesbian fantasies, and even one is riding the porcelain bus, which I must say, doesn't do it for me nearly as much as seeing two women getting it on together. Can I now have a laugh? Been holding onto it the whole time I have been writing this.
