BRISBANE HAS NEVER REALLY GOT OVER THE POST WORLD EXPO `88 ANTI-CLIMAX AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
Just in the mood, a rare one at that considering my wordy approach to writing blogs, to string together a few snippets about some events and happenings which i consider to be cultural lost treasures in the once lucky country of Australia. Considering i am a Brisbane boy from way back, i was privileged enough to have the oppurtunity of experiencing the excitement and euphoria which World Expo `88 brought to the city, one might say that from a social perspective Brisbane has never recovered from the big anti-climax which descended upon the Gen-X residents of Brisbane who were left feelin' as a flat as a tack when the gates to World Expo at South Bank were shut for the very last time. A bit like how a rock star feels after the upper pills wear off and the encore grinds to a halt, that fairly well sums up the legacy of World Expo `88 to this day. Some might argue that the nightclubs that popped up in Brisbane in the 90`s filled the void left behind by Expo, but how could smoked fill dens of iniquity and crowds full of pissheads have ever made up for the sophisticated and progressive entertainment and exhibits which entertained all those who were lucky enough to experience Expo. Brisbane might be a modern progressive city but it's a pity that a lot more than just Steve Ackerie's skyneedle wasn't left behind after the party was over. Brisbane desperately needs another Expo `88 like event more than it needs Powderfinger to reform or to remain a leftist headquarters for socialist politicians.
