METALLICA`S JAMES HETFIELD HAD A MUM WHO WAS A WITCH AND THANKLESS BITCH AND GOT BURNED ALIVE

Long before Metallica made their definitive `black` album in 1991, considered by many to be the metal album to end all metal albums, and even before they had recorded their blistering white knuckle thrash metal masterpiece RIDE THE LIGHTNING in 1984, the band made a cover of a song first recorded by British metal band DIAMOND HEAD in 1980, the song is called AM I EVIL?

Now before you get any ideas that Tim is turning devilish, let me assure you, in case you haven`t heard it, the song and Metallica in general is not Satanic, just very dark and
depressing, with a little subversive satire thrown in maybe.

Unlike thrash bands such as Slayer, that purposely promoted violence and were genuinely evil, Metallica`s music was built
on themes tackling the dark side of humanity and war ect, in the same manner as Megadeth`s Dave Mustaine.

In case you didn`t know, Mustaine started out life in Metallica and he was a member of the band when they first played AM I EVIL? live, but I'm not sure if he was still in the band at the exact time when they recorded it in the studio when recording the 1983 album KILL `EM ALL.

The song didn`t make it onto that album, but was recycled for the album GARAGE INC. later in the decade. Mustaine might have
been around and wrote half of KILL `EM ALL, but he was no longer officially in the band according to the album sleeve.

What about AM I EVIL? Metallica never
sounded more heavy or dynamic, the opening rhythm guitar stanza put on by James Hetfield evokes the atmosphere of two classic but very dark Black Sabbath songs, BLACK SABBATH from 1969 and SYMPTOM OF THE UNIVERSE in 1976.

The band that wrote the song, Diamond Head, have stated that the main inspiration
for writing it was SYMPTOM. I haven`t heard their version, only Metallica`s, but put simply, it is just one damn good monumentally heavy speed metal song, no other song better articulated Metallica`s
passion for punctuating rhythms and mixing classic old blues based riffs with thrash.

One line in the song that I got to mention is both somewhat disturbing but deadset amusing, goes like this - MY MOTHER WAS A WITCH, SHE WAS BURNED ALIVE, THANKLESS LITTLE BITCH, FOR THE TEARS I CRIED.

I hope for Hetfield`s sake he didn`t want to cover the song because his mum was such a bitch of a witch.

Go and play it on You Tube and get a taste of the real Metallica, before they recorded all the formula thrash that you can hear on AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.
