THEY JUST WANT YOUR MONEY

Speeding most certainly is a contributing factor in so many road accidents, there can be no argument about that. For many years now, successive governments and the police have been bombarding us with the 'every K over is a killer' message.

Which in principle is a good thing, because speeding of any kind, no matter how much over the limit it happens to be, should be discouraged. No argument about that either.

However, all the police sanctioned government propaganda which we are bludgeoned and browbeaten with would have us believe that very low range speeding, per say 2 to 5 km/hr over the nominal speed limit, is a very dangerous driving habit which is contributing to a big percentage of serious, as well as fatal road accidents. Really it's just total hogwash.

Ever since QLD police were equipped with more hi-tech digital radar in place of analogue, like had already happened in other states, speeding tolerances set by the police have gone down considerably.

'Unofficially', before digital radar come along, it was commonly known that as
a 'general rule' the police would grant you 10% plus 1km/hr grace at the very least. Which means 'in the old days' QLD police in a 60 zone would only start booking drivers at 68km/hr.

To me, the old speeding tolerances were a fair balance between having the police using what you could only regard as appropriate discretion and at the same time discouraging speeding and enforcing the law.

I don't regard having police or speed camera vans booking QLD drivers for doing 2-5 km/hr over the speed limit as real police work, I regard it as blatant revenue raising.

If it isn't that, then tell me this - why do drivers only lose 1 demerit point for speeding offences up to 13km/hr over the speed limit but cop a totally disproportionate $151 fine?

Upon thinking about it I think I know the answer - the government and the police don't want YOU to lose your  licence and be off the road. They just want your money.
