PRICE OF GLUTEN FREE BREAD IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS

For all those who suffer from celiac disease or some form of gluten intolerance, or for those who just choose to avoid eating anything containing gluten because of the 'wellbeing factor', buying a loaf of gluten free bread is nothing short of daylight robbery.

Gluten is defined as a protein composite, a grouping of proteins which is found in wheat in abundance and in other grains like barley and rye to a much lesser extent.

It's what gives flour it's doughy and glucky composition, and truth is, the standard loaf of bread made with gluten wheat flour is a lot more appetizing than any gluten free bread I have eaten in my time. Generally speaking, the lack of gluten in bread seems to make it prone to be dry, crumbly and not something you would want to serve up to dinner guests.

To my knowledge and better self diagnosis, I don't suffer from celiac disease at this stage, and hope I never acquire it at any stage during my life. I simply avoid wheat because I feel I put on the weight if I eat any more than a very small amount of it. It's not as though I have to avoid it, but for celiac disease sufferers, they don't have a choice - they MUST not eat gluten full stop.

A few different brands of gluten free bread on the market, which are markedly smaller than the standard loaf of bread, retail from anywhere between 7$ to 9$ a loaf, compared to what a standard of load of bread costs it's at least 150% more expensive - at the very least.

Some celiac sufferers I am sure have worked out to be a crafty shopper and know where and when certain supermarkets mark down the price of their hyper-inflated priced gluten free bread which is nearing its use by date, and 'snap it up' for a reasonable price on those occasions.  But the truth is the retail price of gluten free bread should be a lot more reasonable all the time.

Beats me why the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to date hasn't acted to stop this predatory and exploitative price gouging and have gluten free bread classed as an essential food item, and hence, have the price of it regulated like any standard loaf of bread or plain milk. Time has come for the ACCC to do just that.
