COLLECTIVE SOUL WITHOUT `RIVER FLOWS` IS LIKE DEEP PURPLE WITHOUT `SMOKE ON THE WATER`

Anything which constitutes a lost treasure now qualifies as a worthy
item of discussion on the presently `music-less` Lost Treasures Review,
so i would be erring greatly not to put in a plug for a certain ice cream
which i absolutely adored as a kid but is no longer manufactured, i`m
talking about a JELLY TIP. We`re a bit backwards here in Queensland,
if anybody interstate knows where you can find a JELLY TIP south of
the border please let me know, i dont think New South Welshmen or
the Victorians are smart enough to have JELLY TIPS in their fridges.
And i wont even bother asking the kiwis if they have JELLY TIPS in
the land of the long white cloud, because they`re KIWIS, and i`ve
heard they aren`t as smart as Queenslanders so i doubt i`ll find a
JELLY TIP there. The message i am trying to get through to the ice
cream companies in Australia is that we want JELLY TIPS back on
the market, they`re yummy, they`re mouth watering and i reckon
they`re the next best thing to sex without a condom. I didn`t know
what one of those was the last time i had a JELLY TIP. Dont worry,
the cat is safe and i dont get excited when i hear Mr. Whippy get-
ting around the neighbourhood honking his horn but JELLY TIPS just
do it for this dude. Okay, i better chuck in something about music
while i`m here tonight, what do you reckon? Back in around 1993 or
1994, a unique soul infused power grunge band from america hit the
airwaves with this simple and straightforward rock heavy song that
was far from being virtuoso but one of the most grainy guitar driv-
en songs outside the alternative sphere. The song is called `Where
The River Flows` by AOR crossover band Collective Soul. How a gem
of a song like this didn`t make the bands Greatest Hits collection
7EVEN YEAR ITCH, which was released in early 2001, defies all log-
ic. Maybe the band members thought the song was match practise
only for the many well crafted rockers that followed after the song
was released, maybe the analogy was that the mega successful single
`Shine` was a much more definitive and better refined expression of
the three chord guitar riff that powers `Where The River Flows`from
start to finish. I`m not knocking `Shine` whatsoever, it is a great
song, but it would have been a lot better if both these tunes were
on the greatest hits compilation. There is absolutely nothing be-
tween them, it would be a bit like having a Van Halen compilation
with `Jump` on it but without `Dreams`. It never made sense to
me, i ended up gettin my mates dad to burn Where The River Flows
for me, naughty naughty me, when it was still technically legal to
do so, because i wasn`t going to go out and buy the debut original
album of Collective Soul to get the one song that is worthy to get
on any multi-artist rock compilation. Whether it was a case of the
record company dictating to Collective Soul what was considered to
be their best music, or whether the band members were just stupid
and didn`t know what their best song of all time was, the biggest
oversight in the history of 90`s rock was having `Where The River
Flows` snubbed instead of being song number 1 on the greatest hits.
