Teachers are quiting in droves across most of Queensland because they are stressed, they are at breaking point, they are human and because student discipline continues to decline to the point where in many instances they have lost control of their classroom.
For all of us who aren't teachers, let's put ourselves in their shoes. Let's consider how much we "wouldn't" cope if we had someone or some thing in our workplace that we couldn't control, that was out of control, and made our job intolerable to the point where we just wanted to quit.
That in a nutshell is how a growing number of teachers in Queensland schools are feeling.
Feeling like their education minister as well as their own school administration is turning a deaf ear to their conundrum with having to deal with unruly students, but not having any ability or authority to stamp out the abuse which they are on the receiving end of.
The time has surely come for discipline in the classroom to once again be a central plank in every school's ethos.
