REDGUM SERVED IT UP TO MALCOLM FRASER WITH SERVIN' USA
This song might be as corny and bogan as it gets, but it's still yobberish pisstake at its australian best. It's a completely forgotten about parody of the classic BEACH BOYS song SURFIN' USA by australian band REDGUM, which they renamed SERVIN' USA after making some very humerous alterations to the lyrics, with some biting political observations directed at the then prime minister of Australia Malcolm Fraser. Best known of course for the poignant anti-Vietnam anthem I WAS ONLY 19, REDGUM deserve to be remembered for some other fantastic australiana songs which incorporated elements of country and folk with the slightest hint of pub rock, the addition of flute on some REDGUM tracks gave them an almost MEN AT WORK feel, natty and sharp melodic tunes with featherweight production. SERVIN' USA has proven to be prophetic 30 years after it was recorded, it's anti-globalisation, anti-free trade and anti-americanising australia sentiment resonates a very relevent message nowadays, even if it was originally intended to be just an excuse to take the piss out of Malcolm Fraser.
