The Albanese government's under 16s social media ban legislation, which has the full bipartisan support of Peter Dutton and the opposition, is not the answer to eliminating so many of the problems which malign all the major social media platforms.
Problems which mainly centre around abuse and harassment against political and public figures by anonymous users who go by a pseudo idiom, not their real name.
Yes, online keyboard warriors who rant and type abuse directed at any politician or public figure need to be banned from being on social media full stop.
Such a "disciplinary regime" cannot be that hard for the likes of X and Facebook to enforce, if laws specifically targeting online abuse enacted in Australia demand that.
Abuse is the problem with social media that the Albanese government and Dutton opposition has every right to rein in and stamp out.
But they do not have any right to play the role of a parent or guardian and ban young teens under 16 from social media - holus bolus.
Of course some 13 to 15 year olds should be doing other things, much healthier things, like playing sport, rather than being on Facebook, Tik Tok and Snapchat etc most of their spare time. But that's up to parents and guardians to deal with, and remedy.
Not the Albanese government/ Dutton opposition with this wildly misdirected and mischievous legislation, which is an affront to something quite nefarious which has absolutely nothing to do with "protecting the kids".
