Without descending into "conspiracy theory territory", the cold hard truth is that there continues to be a lot of dubious goings on to do to do with beekeepers in Australasia (meaning Australia and New Zealand) and very plausible reports of biosecurity overkill, resulting in the needless destruction of so many beehives.
In Australia, it primarily revolves around Varroa mite, in New Zealand it's American foulbrood disease.
A growing number of beekeepers from both countries are claiming, documenting, including videoing, their predicament of having to destroy their entire apiary on the basis of what they claim is "maliciously false diagnosis" by biosecurity officers that Varroa mite or American foulbrood has infected their hives.
Even with an independent inspection to gauge a second or third opinion, the beekeepers in question haven't, and do not it seems, have a leg to stand on to stop this government biosecurity decreed authority to annihilate their bees.
In Australia, some strict protocols which currently don't exist in relation to biosecurity procedures and actions with beekeepers must be set in place immediately.
Government employed biosecurity officers have to be fully accountable for every beehive they determine has to be destroyed - no exceptions.
Accountability meaning that local media organisations closest to where biosecurity officers plan to destroy an apiary must be informed in writing of such taking place at least 7 days before it is scheduled to occur.
Furthermore, the beekeepers in question who face financial ruin and having their lives upended due to the imminent destruction of their bees must be provided 14 days notice prior to when it is scheduled to occur to give them an opportunity to have an "independent inspection" of their hives take place by an accredited, reputable and fully objective source.
