BOB KATTER'S OUTBACK YOUTH PRISON IDEA A GREAT ONE TO DEAL WITH JUVENILE OFFENDERS

Bob Katter generally doesn't come up with too many groundbreaking ideas and new policies, but fairly recently, he come up with a ripper.

That idea being to build a detention facility somewhere way out in western Queensland, for juvenile offenders.

A facility that would offer juvenile offenders a sanctuary in comparison to a mainstream jail.

Where they would have a much more realistic chance of being rehabilitated, where their human rights and dignity would be respected, where they could do "healthy things", like jackaroo or farmhand work, as part of their reform.

They would be loathe and foolish to attempt to escape this yet to materialise detention facility, because according to "Katter's vision", it would be so isolated that they wouldn't survive the walk to the nearest town if they miraculously did escape. It would still be jail, not a holiday camp.

Katter's idea is really just an adaptation of the Boystown prison farm concept. The biggest mistake of all, as far as reducing the incidence of juvenile crime in Queensland, was the abolition of Boystown many years ago.

Of course, a lot of other factors in the years since have exacerbated the youth crime problem to the point where it is now, but Boystown getting the axe was where the rot started.
