Australia would not be the great multi-cultural country it is today if it wasn't for migration over the past 75 or so years.

A big percentage of migrants since the end of WW2 have brought with them skills, a strong work ethic and a genuine willingness to contribute greatly to the country which adopted them, and in many instances, gave them a second chance in life.

So in principle, Australia's record intake of migrants, at the instigation of the Albanese government, should be "cautiously welcomed".

However, before Australia takes in such a huge influx of migrants like never before, the house has to be in order, and the fact is, right now it isn't. That house being Australia.

With a critical housing crisis still unresolved in the greater proportion of urban areas across the country, having a record number of migrants descending upon Australia is going to exacerbate the housing crisis to the point of no return.

Then you have the issue of migrants driving up and artificially inflating property values, and basically pricing out first home buyers and the average Australian who is wanting to escape the rental merry go round and purchase their own house.

Besides the direct economic factors which weigh heavily against a record migrant intake, issues like public transport shortcomings and further burdening already cash strapped and resource stretched service providers, particularly in out of city areas, clearly are not resolved enough to even fully facilitate the needs of the present population.
