CRACKDOWN ON THE GREYHOUND RACING INDUSTRY IS NEEDED - NOT MIKE BAIRD'S ABOMINATION

The greyhound racing industry across Australia needs a consummate cleaning out, and will continue to do so in the years to come. It's an industry which has been maligned and bastardized by some greyhound trainers and owners who belong in jail for being guilty of the worst of the worst in animal cruelty.

However, to abominate a whole industry due to the actions of rogues within an industry is as kneejerk and over-reactionary as it gets.

Which is what the Mike Baird government has done to greyhound racing in NSW. It's over the top and not a reasoned and level headed response from Baird to some very troubling but not unrectifiable animal welfare issues exposed by the NSW inquiry into the greyhound racing industry.

In Queensland, the Palaszczuk government must avoid falling into the stereotypical "they're all dog abusers" trap which Baird in NSW has done and shut down greyhound racing in Queensland altogether.

There is such a thing as finding a happy medium, and also such a thing as enacting new no-nonsense and very stringent "one-strike and you're banned for life" laws - aimed fairly and squarely at all greyhound trainers and owners.

Meaning that if any of them in Queensland from this moment onwards is caught out for abusing, torturing, live baiting and doping any dog, or killing them because "they're not fast enough", will face the strong arm of the law and a life ban from any involvement in the greyhound racing industry.
