MISSED OUT ON MARISSA HARRIS BUT I ALWAYS GOT JOHN MOONEY

Back in the late 90`s and very early 2000`s, i use to frequently
go to Sunflower Music at Garden City Shopping Centre to buy
my favorite specialty music, especially obscure blues stuff. It
wasn`t just because i liked Marissa who worked there, man
i wonder what ever happened to good `ol Mariss. She was a
bit up herself, and i think i would have been quickly initiated
into finding out what tough love and getting dirty knees was
all about if i had gotten together with her. She was definitely
high maintenance stuff but for some reason she lasooed me
and i was in love. Then all of a sudden Sunflower Music shut
up shop and i never got a chance to say goodbye. A very typ-
ical Tim Badrick story from the past decade and a half. Any-
way, Sunflower Music stayed open long enough for me to get
my hands on a CD by little known US bluesman John Mooney.
Mooney brought out a CD in 1996 called `Against The Wall`,
and it remains one of my favourite blues records recorded in
New Orleans. Characterised by jazzy drumming and a very
detached atmospheric feel, Mooney`s swamped up guitar
riffs float effortlessly over a rhythm section that sensibly
doesn`t drown out the main attraction. He is not the best
singer in the world, but what he does about fits in perfect-
ly with the assertive but not overwhelming jamming that
features on the album. Mooney`s lyrics are a mixture of
southern voodoo and satire at the expense of love gone
wrong. `Sacred Ground`, `Doggone Thing` & `3 Sides
To Every Story` are the best three tracks, ten songs
in total, the other seven are good upbeat blues, a bit
of Memphis Blues meets New Orleans is what it is.
